Most big cities in the United States have a part of the city that is called Little India and typically consists not only of restaurants and grocery stores but may have special stores such as jewellers, tailors, stylists, henna artists etc. Los Angeles has Artesia, Chicago has Devon Ave and New Jersey has Edison but Dallas does not have one area that we feel can be called Little India, although there are large number of strip malls around the metroplex that serve the purpose of what a typical Little India would. In this article, we will try and cover some of the areas around town that we find serve the Desi population well.

South Irving - Just around the 183 Highway south of DFW Airport in Irving is what we think are the most populated desi stores in the Metroplex. There are about 3 large Indian grocery stores, Patel Bros, Namaste India and India Imports not to mention over a dozen other small to medium grocery stores. In this area, you will also find many restaurants including Taj Chaat House,Samosa Hut (a small restaurant with a unique Somasa offerings) and a Gujarati thali place as well.

Las Colinas - Often referred to as Gandhinagar, the area just north of 114 also has a large Indian population and desi stores. There are 2-3 strip malls there which has desi grocery stores and restaurants including the popular Hot Breads. While this area does not have the huge stores, it does have enough to serve your needs and you may have to go to South Irving or Valley Ranch if you need more.

Valley Ranch - North of 635 in Irving is the Valley Ranch area which also has a number of desi stores. One of the most visited areas is the strip mall that has the India Bazaar grocery store. Not only is this big store popular with the Indian community, this strip mall has 4 Indian restaurants, sweet store, a Lakme beauty salon, a Sheetal boutique and a halal meat store. You can pretty much get everything in this little strip mall.

Carrollton - The area of Carrollton around the Turnpike and Old Denton Rd should probably be called Little Pakistan with the number of Pakistani stores and restaurants. If you are looking for some good Biryani, Haleem or Nihari, this area of the metroplex is a must visit. The Indo-Pak plaza on Trinity Mills has a huge grocery store, Royal Sweets, a video store and a couple of restaurants. If you drive to the next strip mall, you will find Al Markza, a popular place for groceries and Pakistani cuisine. You will also find Agha Juice here where you can get some Kulfi.

Richardson - One small section of Richardson around Belt Line and highway 75 also has a number of little Desi stores including Bollywood Groceries, Royal Sweets and a couple of boutiques etc. Richardson also has a reasonably large Indian population and Desi stores.

There are other parts of the Metroplex where you find Desi stores such as Plano, Arlington and Garland. You can explore more on our sections below
